HADRIAN’S VILLA:
A REPORT ON THE 2019 APAHA CAMPAIGN

Friday, June 26, 11am-12:30pm EDT
In 2019, the Advanced Program of Ancient History and Art conducted its sixth fieldwork season at Hadrian’s Villa, at the site known as the “Macchiozzo.” APAHA Directors Francesco de Angelis (Columbia) and Marco Maiuro (Sapienza) will report on the results of these excavations and will discuss their broader relevance within the framework of ancient history, art, and architecture. Among the most remarkable findings that the seminar will present are: the excavation of a new courtyard building of Hadrianic age, whose similarity to an adjacent one explored in previous seasons provides insights into the architectural planning process of the whole compound; the discovery and restoration of several remarkable floor mosaics, whose quality exceeds that of all other black-and-white mosaics known so far at the villa; the virtual reconstruction of the largest painted ceiling of the complex; the many attestations of the ongoing vitality of the area long after Hadrian, particularly in the fourth century; and the exceptional finding of a ceramic bowl that provides, for the first time, crucial information about major changes in the religious culture of the villa’s residents in Late Antiquity.
