“What’s new in Roman Greece: some thoughts on directions and findings in recent research”

February 28th 2020

951 Schermerhorn Extension

Susan Alcock’s groundbreaking book on Roman Greece (1993) was based upon a particular material (survey data) and a particular problematique (the decline of Roman Greece). The latter has been challenged lately, but what about the archaeological material that came to light in the last 25 years? The questions have grown richer and more sophisticated and the sense of local nuances has deepened well beyond economic and social downturn.  A recent conference on Roman Greece offers the occasion to reset the stage and to further elaborate on various points of view for instance on the dynamic nature of relations and production in the country side.
