Shannon Oliver White is a PhD student in the classical studies program. His research interests include sociopolitical and cultural development in the eastern Mediterranean, the history of Greek colonization, and early Greek literature. He graduated from UC Berkeley in 2022 with a BA in classical languages. His honors thesis discussed identity and early state formation in archaic Greek settlements along the Anatolian coast, seeking to reconceptualize ethnicity and self-identification in a historically fluid region. Shannon has excavated at the ancient Macedonian city of Pella and was previously involved with the UC Berkeley Nemea Center for Classical Archaeology’s projects at Nemea and Mycenae.
