Students from the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences have organized the EESC GR9810 Seminar in Race, Climate Change and Environmental Justice, open to graduate and undergraduate students. The seminar had a highly successful and engaging semester in the Fall with 100+ attendees from many different disciplines at each lecture, and is looking forward to another semester of exciting speakers.  This course is open to undergraduates and graduate students from all departments.

Seminar organizers encourage students to continue their engagement with environmental justice, anti-racism, diversity, equity and inclusion topics in geoscience by taking the second iteration of this course. This seminar is Pass/Fail and can be taken for either one or two credits, with a description for each credit option found below:

  • 1 credit version: Throughout the spring, the seminar will hear from renowned experts on the racial, gender, and socioeconomic inequalities perpetuated by environmental and climate crises. We’ll be kicking it off with a panel of climate journalists on January 19. To receive passing credit, students are expected to attend weekly seminars and submit one final reflection. All members of the Columbia community are invited to join for these talks and Q&A – please add this calendar to your schedules. (Tuesdays 11:40 AM – 12:55 PM ET, call #13857)
  • 2 credit version: Discussion section focused on community-based environmental justice research. Many students in last semester’s RCEJ Seminar asked, “how can we take what we are learning here, and apply it towards creating meaningful change in our communities?” This Spring semester’s discussion section will bring in speakers, external mentors, advisors, and creatives, and will be a collaborative effort to develop community-based participatory environmental research pedagogy and curriculum. (Thursdays 11:40 AM – 12:55 PM ET, call #13859)

Accessibility: This semester, all course lectures will be live captioned by a professional captioner. Transcripts sync’d to video recordings will be made available after each presentation. The seminar is also open to having language translators, note-takers, or accommodating everyone in whatever ways you need. If you have a request for how to make this a better virtual experience, or if you were unable to attend last semester’s courses due to accessibility issues, please email Garima (garima.raheja@columbia.edu) and the seminar will be happy to find ways to make this class work for you.

Organizers invite students from all departments to sign up for GR9810 and attend the first classes of each section next week, where we will discuss course logistics and content. If you have any questions, please feel free to email Clara Chang at cchang@ldeo.columbia.edu.
